Why 1024 instead of 1000?
Computers work in binary, so operating systems define 1 kilobyte as 1,024 bytes, 1 megabyte as 1,024 kilobytes and so on. This tool follows that binary convention, which is why a 1 TB drive shows as about 931 GB in Windows. Hard-drive makers often advertise with decimal 1,000-based units instead.
How many bits are in a byte?
There are exactly 8 bits in one byte. Internet speeds are advertised in megabits per second while downloads are measured in megabytes, so dividing by 8 converts between them: a 100 Mbps connection downloads at most 12.5 MB per second under ideal conditions.
How large is a terabyte in gigabytes?
Using binary units, 1 terabyte equals 1,024 gigabytes, which is 1,099,511,627,776 bytes. That holds roughly 250,000 high-quality photos or about 500 hours of HD video, making the terabyte the standard unit for modern hard drives and cloud storage plans.
